When I want what the world can offer the promises of the Bible disappoint me. They disappoint me because I try and read them in such a way to guarantee financial security, health, safety for my little girls, stress free days, recognition — the world.

But the Bible does not promise those things. Not now anyway. God won’t let me forfeit my soul so easily.

We are promised the world only once, and that is when all things are made new. Then we will have it forever. In the end, the meek are the ones who get to keep it all. Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). Be envious. See what they are getting and long for it. But if you try to get it now, you will lose everything.

He will tear us from everything we love more than God: family, comfort, health, recognition. He will tear us from them because God is merciful. Because he keeps those who are his children. Because he must teach us how to love him. And when we finally want him, there are no sweeter promises than the ones we find on the pages of the Bible.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of Go in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

O God, make that promise sweet to me.
